The 1,070 school districts across Illinois serve nearly two million students. Residents have a variety of choices when it comes to school settings. The choices include traditional public schools, public charter, public magnet, private, online schools, or learning pods. These public and private schools need qualified teachers which provides many opportunities for those who want to teach in Illinois. Whether you are looking for a teaching position in an elementary, middle school, or high school classroom, there are a wide variety of options available.
For those who are interested in teaching in Illinois, larger school districts like the Chicago Public School system provide many opportunities. But there are also some large school districts outside the Chicagoland area such as the Rockford, Plainfield, and Naperville school districts. If you prefer to teach in smaller rural areas, Illinois still has plenty of opportunities in areas like Clinton, Remington, Fowler, and Robinson, IL.
Illinois Teacher Qualifications and Certifications
To teach in Illinois, prospective teachers must hold a bachelor’s degree. Most educators will receive teacher preparation programs as part of the traditional coursework. Illinois offers three types of licenses for teachers. For each of the licenses, teaching candidates earn endorsements appropriate to the grade levels or subjects they will teach. Teachers in Illinois are also required to pass three exams which include a basic skills test, specific content areas examination, and the edTPA. The state does provide alternative routes to teach for those who hold a bachelor’s degree but haven’t taken the teacher preparation coursework.
