Idaho Teacher Qualifications and Certifications

There are alternative routes to teacher certification in Idaho if you hold a bachelor’s or master’s degree but did not complete the teacher prep program. Before applying to teach in Idaho, you’ll need to pass the applicable Praxis Subject Assessment for the subject or subjects you want to teach. Early childhood and elementary school teachers must pass the Idaho State Comprehensive Literacy Assessment as well.

Blazer Jobs is currently seeking a qualified Orientation Mobility Specialist to join the team at the Idaho School for the Deaf and Blind for the 2024-25 school year. This position is critical in helping students with vision loss develop essential skills for independence and navigation.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Service Delivery: Provide orientation and mobility training to students with vision loss, focusing on developing skills for safe navigation in various environments.
  • Collaborative Work: Work collaboratively with a multidisciplinary team to support students' learning and development.
  • Curriculum Development: Implement the Expanded Core Curriculum for students with vision loss, ensuring that students gain necessary life skills.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Certification: Must hold a Certification as an Orientation and Mobility Specialist (COMS) by the Academy for Certification of Vision Rehabilitation and Education Professionals (ACVREP) or equivalent.
  • Education: Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Orientation and Mobility or a related field.
  • Experience: Proven experience working with children and adolescents who have vision loss.
  • Skills: Strong understanding of the Expanded Core Curriculum, excellent communication and interpersonal skills, and a commitment to fostering a supportive and inclusive learning environment.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience teaching independent living skills to students with visual impairments.
  • Familiarity with assistive technology and devices used by individuals with visual impairments.
  • Teacher certification with a Blind Low Vision endorsement.
  • Bilingual abilities, including American Sign Language (ASL), are a plus.

Special Requirements:

  • Must be fully licensed and able to work onsite only.
