The 117 schools across the District of Columbia serve over 51,000 students. Much like the rest of the US, parents in the DC area have plenty of options when it comes to their children’s schools. The K-12 schools in the District of Columbia include traditional public schools, about 100 public charter schools, private schools, virtual schools, or one of the few public magnet schools like the Duke Ellington School of the Arts. Schools offer plenty of opportunities for teachers who are looking for elementary, middle school, or high school teaching positions.

District of Columbia Teacher Certification and Qualifications

If you want to obtain certification to teach in the District of Columbia, you will first need to obtain a bachelor’s degree and complete an approved teacher preparation program. You will also need
to pass the required teacher skills tests as well as complete a criminal background check. There are alternate paths to certification for those who hold a bachelor’s degree but have not completed the approved teacher preparation program.
